Relativistic time mentioned in the Quran

In this blog, I have written about the verse of the Holy Quran in which Allah Almighty talks about the relativity of time.

Translation of verse 5 of Surah As-Sajdah

He conducts(governs) everything from the heavens to the earth, and then everything ascends to him on a day whose length by your reckoning is a thousand years.

Explanation

The above-mentioned verse of the Holy Quran talks about a very famous concept in physics, which is the relativity of time, also known as time dilation. Late 19th and early 20th century scientists such as Lorentz, Emil Kuhn, Hermann Minkowski, Albert Einstein and many others theorized this concept, but Einstein made the greatest contribution. Time dilation deals with the fact that time is not absolute but relative. In general, time dilation is defined as how fast or how slow time will pass depending on the reference frame (accelerating/moving or non-accelerating/at rest or speeds much slower than the speed of light). Time is also affected by the pull of gravity on an object. This means that time will pass more slowly for someone moving at or near the speed of light than for someone moving at normal speed or not moving at all. For example, after spending 6 months on the International Space Station (ISS), orbiting the Earth at a speed of about 7,700 m/s, an astronaut's lifespan would be about 0.005 seconds less than that on Earth. This also means that time is also affected by gravity. The greater the gravity, the slower the time. For example, if someone is on the moon, their clock ticks faster because time passes faster for them than for someone on Earth. This is because the Earth's gravity is stronger than the Moon's gravity. In addition to this time could also slow. Down near massive objects such as supermassive blackhole etc. The reason for this is because masaive or heavy object have more gravitational pull which can slow down time.

Now, if we move back to the verse, in the first part of the verse, there is a mention of Allah conducting every matter from heavens to Earth. These matters refer to the commands of Allah who govern this and all the heavens. Without His command, not even a particle of dust or a leaf can move by itself. It is his command which governs each and everything which is happening around us. With his command, we breathe and live our lives. It is his command with which we come into this world, and with his command, one day we will die as well. This is the glory of Allah. Then in the next part of the verse, it is mentioned that 'all this ascends to him on a day whose length is a thousand years of our reckoning.' The last part of this verse falls under the category of Relativistic time or Time dilation. A thousand years, by our reckoning,, could mean that a thousand years in our frame of reference is equal to one day in Allah's frame of reference. Time could be slower in Allah's frame of reference due to various factors that slow time, which I have mentioned above, such as gravity, mass and size of the throne and Qursi of Allah, and there could be some other factors involved in this as well, and Allah knows best. This verse is one of the many verses of the Holy Qur'an which describe scientific facts so accurately that 1400 years ago when people of that time could not even imagine such a thing. This is clear proof that the Holy Quran is the book of Allah and it has been sent to guide us. One thing to note is that this verse and all other scientific verses of the Quran do not make the Quran a book of science. This is a book of 'signs'. The mention of such signs or such verses is only so that we can ponder upon the greatness and wisdom of Allah Almighty.

One thing to keep in mind is that there can be various others explanations of this verse and only Allah Almighty knows what is the correct explanation.

Views of Al-Kindi on Relativistic Time

Al-Kindi (801-873AD) was a famous Muslim scientist who lived during the Islamic Golden Age. He was one of the most esteemed scholars of his time. He worked extensively in fields like medicine, astronomy, physics, mathematics, optics, etc. He was also a pioneer of cryptography and scientific methodology. Al-Kandi is said to have proposed an unproven theory of relativity 1,100 years before Einstein.

Al-Kindi argued in his book al-Falsafa al-Aula that a person sees an object whose size is small or large according to the vertical movement between the earth and the sky. If a person moves towards the sky, he will see the trees getting smaller and if he moves towards the earth, he will see the trees getting bigger. According to al-Kindi, objects, time, motion and space are not only relative to each other but also to other objects and observers who observe them. He viewed it as an essence of the law of existence.

Earth being 'Spread out' mentioned in the Quran

In this blog, I have written about Earth being 'Spread out' mentioned in the Quran.

Translation of Verse 19 of Surah Nuh

And Allah has made the earth(land) for you as a carpet (spread out).

Explanation:

In the verse 19 of Surah Nuh Allah says that the earth or land is spread out or it is like a carpet. Many people cite this verse when they argue that the Quran says that the Earth is flat. In this verse, it does not say that the Earth is flat but it says that it is spread out which is true. If you go on top of a high-rise building you will observe that the landscape around you is levelled like a carpet or spread out.

The reason Allah has made the land spread out is so that we can walk on it and perform several other tasks like growing crops, building out houses etc. Flatness and being spread out have 2 different meanings. This was also the view of a very renowned 14th century scholar Ibn Kathir.

Translation of Verse 44 of Surah An-Nur

"Allah alternates the day and night. Surely in this is a lesson for people of insight."

Explanation:

I wrote about the shape of the earth mentioned in the Quran in my previous blog. If you want to read it then click on this link Shape of the Earth mentioned in the Quran. In the previous verse I said that the land on which we live has been spread so that we can perform our daily life activities. In the verse 44 of Surah An-nur Allah says that he alternates the day and night. This could only be possible if the Earth is spherical. In the verse which I explained in my blog Description of the Rotation of the Earth and the mention of the Orbit of the Moon and Sun in the Quran it is written that "he wraps(folds) the day around night and night around day." The word وَيُكَوِّرُ 'Wayukawir' used in verse 5 of Surah Az-Zumr means to wrap or fold around as if you fold or wrap a turban around your head. This is what we observe after sunset the night wraps around the day and the same occurs early in the morning before sunset. At the end of verse 44 of Surah An-Nur, it is written that it is a lesson for people of insight like Physicists, Astronomers and other scientists. The lesson is to ponder upon the wisdom and greatness of Allah who mentioned these scientific facts with such great precision 1400 years ago when the technology at that time was not sufficient to research these facts. These verses and many other verses are clear prooves that the Quran is the word of Allah. Although it contains many scientific facts with great accuracy but the Quran is not a book of science it is the book of guidance. These scientific facts are mentioned only so that we can ponder upon the greatness of Allah Almighty.

One thing to keep in mind is that there can be various others explanations of these verses and only Allah Almighty knows what is the correct explanation.

Shape of the Earth mentioned in the Quran

In my previous blog, I wrote about the explanation of Verse 5 of Surah Az-Zumar which mentions how day changes to night and how night changes to day. The only 2 ways for this to be possible is that the Earth rotate around its axis which I wrote about in my previous blog and the second possibility is that the Earth is spherical. In this blog, I will discuss about the spherical shape of the Earth.

Translation of Verse 30 of Surah al-Naziat

He made the earth egg-shaped.

Explanation:

This verse of the Quran mentions that the Earth is shaped like an egg. Some people say that the Earth is round but in reality, it is not completely round. It is flat at the poles and bulging from the equator. If you compare the image of the Earth which we got from the pictures taken from the satellites with an egg. You will get to know that the shapes of the Earth and an egg are in quite resemblance to one another.

All this is described in the Quran 1400 years ago which is clear proof that the Quran is the word of Allah. It has been sent to the Prophet Muhammad SAW for our guidance on our right path. While the Quran does have many scientific facts but this doesn't make the Quran a book of Science but it is the book of guidance so that we can succeed in this life and the life hereafter. These scientific facts are mentioned in the Quran only so that the People can ponder upon the greatness of Allah Almighty.

One thing to keep in mind is that there can be various others explanations of this verse and only Allah Almighty knows what is the correct explanation.

Views of Muslim Scholars

These facts which the Quran described 1400 years ago were proved scientifically a few centuries ago. Although the concept of round earth was common among Greek Astronomers like Aristotle and many other Greek scientists there was still debate among the scholars for the accuracy of this claim. In the medieval Muslim era as well this concept of the Earth being spherical was common knowledge due to this and many other verses of the Quran. Muslim scholars such as Ibn-al-Hazm and Fakharuddin Razi proved scientifically that the Earth is spherical.

Al-Biruni was the first scientist to measure the radius of the earth which differed by only 16.8km from the current value of 6356.7km. All Muslim scientists believed not only in the accuracy of the Quran but also in their own Mathematics. Theologians like Ibn-Tayimiah also agreed with Ibn-Hazm and many other Muslim scientists of that time. Imam Ghazali, a 14th-century Muslim philosopher went as far as to say that those who deny the fact of a spherical earth is mocking Islam. Even the first 3 centuries of Muslims which were the best people in understanding Islam according to a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad SAW “The best people are those of my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them.” [Bukhari 6065] They also believed the earth as spherical. Muslim geographer Ibn Khordadbeh (died 912 A.D), also argued about the spherical shape of the Earth in his Book of Roads and Kingdoms which mentions various import trade routes of that era. Ibn Abbas who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad SAW and probably among the companions with the most knowledge also believed the Earth to be spherical in shape. The map given below by the 12th-century Muslim Geographer Muhammad al Idris also depicts the Earth as spherical.

The idea of the spherical earth was proposed in the West by scientists like Galileo and Copperenicus but they were met with severe criticism and opposition from the Church. Unlike, in the Muslim world where both the Theologians and Scientists agreed upon the spherical shape of the Earth.

Quran on the Beginning of the Universe

In this blog, I have written about the verse of the Quran, which tells us about the beginning of the universe.

Translation of Verse 30 of Surah Al-Anbiya

Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass, then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

Explanation

In the above-mentioned verse of the Quran. Allah told us that he created the universe from one mass, and then from that, he split the heavens and earth. The Big Bang Theory agrees a lot with this verse of the Holy Quran. The Big Bang theory tells us that in the beginning, the universe was a singularity and at that point, it had infinite density, energy, and temperature. Then it exploded(expanded very rapidly) into existence and, as a result, created matter, which further evolved to form planets, stars galaxies, etc. This process of rapid explosion is referred to as Cosmic inflation. From that point until now, the universe has been expanding. In the above-mentioned verse, one mass points to a point known as singularity a point where space and time were combined together. The second part of the verse tells us that every living thing is made of water. Today, science has told us that water is an essential part of life. It makes up about 90 per cent of the weight of some organisms. In the case of humans, it makes up about 60 per cent of our weight. This verse of the Quran gives proof of the divinity of the Quran. Otherwise, a man in the 7th century could never know these scientific facts with such accuracy and it also inspires us to read the Quran not only for our guidance to the right path but also to know the immense amount of knowledge hidden in between the verses of the Quran.

Process of Cloud Formation mentioned in the Quran

In this blog, I have written about the process of cloud formation mentioned in the Quran.

Translation of Verse 18 of Surah Al-Muminun

We send down rain from the sky in perfect measure, causing it to soak into the earth. And We are surely able to take it away.

Translation of Verse 29 of Surah Al-Zumar

Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky—channelling it through streams in the earth—then produces with it crops of various colours, then they dry up and you see them wither, and then He reduces them to chaff? Surely this is a reminder for people of reason.

Translation of Verse 24 of Surah Al-Rum

And of His signs is [that] He shows you the lightning [causing] fear and aspiration, and He sends down rain from the sky by which He brings to life the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed these are signs for people who use reason.

Translation of Verse 48 of Surah Al-Rum

It is Allah Who sends the winds, which then stir up ˹vapour, forming˺ clouds, which He then spreads out in the sky or piles up into masses as He wills, from which you see the rain come forth. Then as soon as He causes it to fall on whoever He wills of His servants, they rejoice,

Explanation

In these verses of the Quran, Allah tells us about the process of rain formation, which we have just discovered recently. Allah tells us in verse 48 of Surah Al-Rum how the clouds form when winds move in the upper atmosphere, causing water vapours to join and condense, which results in cloud formation. Then Allah has told us in Verse 18 of Surah Al-Muminun and Verse 29 of Surah Al-Zumar how rain falls from the sky and how it seeps into the earth via streams and rivers. This fact was mentioned in the Quran 1400 years ago which we have just discovered recently. There is also the mention of how he brings life to the earth after its lifelessness in verse 24 of Surah Al-Rum. This process is quite common, especially in drought-affected areas where the plants and animals start to die due to the intense heat and dryness, but when it rains, life starts to return to normal as it was before the drought. Then it is also mentioned in verse 24 of Surah Al-Rum and Verse 29 of Surah Al-Zumar that these are signs for people of reason upon the existence of a divine creator that is Allah SWT.

In this blog, I have written about the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH regarding praying at Home on a cold and windy night and Hadith regarding al-Qisas on the Day of resurrection.

Hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH regarding praying at Home on a cold and windy night

Once on a very cold and stormy night, Ibn `Umar pronounced the Adhan for the prayer and then said, "Pray in your homes." He (Ibn `Umar) added. "On very cold and rainy nights Allah's Messenger SAW used to order the Muadh-dhin(One who recites the Adhan)to say, 'Pray in your homes.' " [Sahih Bukhari 666]

Hadith regarding al-Qisas on the Day of resurrection

The Prophet PBUH said, "The cases which will be decided first (on the Day of Resurrection) will be the cases of blood-shedding/al-Qisas."[Bukhari 6533]
